“It is time for the European Union to take a principled stand in favour of international law, by opposing the illegal and destabilising occupation of parts of Syria by several non-EU states.”
This is the response of Alliance for Peace and Freedom President Roberto Fiore to the news that the USA and Norway are flouting United Nations Resolutions on combating terrorism by sending Special Forces troops to northern Syria.
“The UN Resolutions and international law explicitly state that international efforts to fight terrorism be carried out in co-ordination with the governments of the states affected.
“The Syrian government’s qualification in this regard is confirmed in international law by the presence of its representative at the United Nations.
“The Syrian government has condemned the action of the USA in sending150 soldiers to the Kurdish Syrian town of Rumeilan on Wednesday, and the announcement by President Obama on April 28 of plans ‘to deploy up to 250 additional US personnel to Syria, including Special Forces’.
Syria has likewise condemned the unilateral and illegal decision of Norway to send 60 Special Forces troops, uninvited and unwanted, to its sovereign territory.
“We are, of course, aware that the ruling parties in Brussels share Washington’s opposition to the democratically elected government of President Assad. But political opinions – however strongly held – do not entitle those who hold them to ride roughshod over international law.
“The APF therefore calls on the European Commission and European Parliament to confirm their respect for international law, their commitment to the full implementation of UN Resolutions on combating terrorism and conflict in the Middle East, and to condemn the repeated interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states by the Obama regime.”
