The European Parliament likes to present itself as a champion of democracy, but discriminates brutally against its own dissidents more and more. In 2015 alone, the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, issued three bans against people to enter the buildings of Parliament, two of which concerned – in June 2015 – Russian politicians, only because they were Russian. Against this background, the appeals by EU-representatives to observe democratic rights in other parts of the world are extremely hypocritical.
Today, another case of political discrimination has emerged. On tuesday 16.02, German Member of Parliament Udo Voigt wanted to open a photo exhibition titled “Syria‘s legacy – the cradle of Civilisation” and wanted to show it until the end of the week in the Brussels Parliament buildings. For this opening, a lot of guests were invited, including many diplomats, who were very interested.
In the EU-parliament, such exhibitions organised by Members of Parliament are routine; the relevant provisions of the Rules of Procedure only provide that no “political” issues must be dealt with – a remarkable rule for a political institution such as the European Parliament. Udo Voigt followed this rule by choosing cultural subjects for his pictures to show – but of course also documented some of the devastation caused to the Syrian heritage by Syrian rebel and terrorist militias, such as the “Islamic State” (IS).
So much truth was clearly unacceptable for the Brussels Parliament‘s administration: The competent “Quaestors” forbade the exhibition – after Udo Voigt had received first green light in October, 2015.
In the past, there were never objections against bloody propaganda exhibitions of other political Groups and Members against Russia or Syria. The MEP of NPD will not accept this arbitrary measure and this censorship. The exhibition will now be shown as a traveling exhibition in various places in Europe.
In this video, MEP Voigt discusses shortly the ban.
